Pack 5 is about doing great things. Fun stuff. Learning to do it the right way (safety always comes first). To help you make the most of this, we keep our current Cub Scout Pack 5 calendar updated on the left of this Home Page.

Most activities are designed for the boys we serve, in first through fourth grades. But some are just for your parents and Adult Leaders — times we need to come together and plan and get organized to keep things running smoothly. And even to listen for new ideas.

Looking for more? All Pack 5 Cub Scouts are also part of "Dens" that are only for boys in the same grade, closer in age. In addition to all the activities we've listed for the Pack as a whole, your Den Leader will give you a list of dates and activities you'll have a chance to do with those boys who are near to the same age.

As a Registered Youth in this Pack, you're also invited to participate in many regional events organized by the "Great Sauk Trail Council," of which we are a part. Here's a link to their Home Page (see "Calendar").

It's a game ... with a purpose!

Have you thought about joining Cub Scouts?

We’d like you to consider Cub Scout Pack 5 of Ann Arbor.

“Cub Scouts” is a part of the Boy Scouts of America, and it’s designed especially for young men in first through fifth grades. We meet each month as a “Pack,” where you’ll play games, get awards for your achievements, and plan for exciting activities — such as Pinewood Derby car races, cake baking competitions, and even some simple camping trips where your parents will come along, too!

Between Pack Meetings, you’ll get together as a “Den,” which is only for boys from your grade: Your Den will make crafts, learn about nature and team sports, and find new friendships.

What do you know about Pack 5?

You can join any Pack you wish, regardless of where you live. But we’d like you to consider Pack 5. We’re one of the oldest Packs in all the United States, created over 70 years ago! We are known for our commitment to the Ann Arbor community through activities such as our annual Pancake Supper each Fall, and our tree planting every Spring.

Our trained adult leaders are here to keep you safe and make sure the activities are well organized. That means you’ll get to try out and develop skills for yourself in learning to do grown-up things: Supervised handling of pocket knifes for carving wood, hitting the bull’s-eye with a real bow and arrow, swimming in a lake, sleeping overnight in a cabin in the woods, and building a fire from scratch using things you may already have in your pocket right now.

You can join today!

New boys can join Pack 5 any time of the year — at any age level for Cub Scouts (the program is designed so you won’t be “behind” even if you didn’t start as a first-grader; the oldest boys in our Pack are still learning new things).

Why not check us out at one of our scheduled round-up days at either Bach or Eberwhite Elementary School? Or drop in on our next Pack Meeting! As your Cubmaster, I’d also love to discuss our program further and answer any questions from your parents at any time. For now, thank you for considering Cub Scout Pack 5.

Yours in Scouting,

Dell Deaton, C-60-08

How will you track your progress in Cub Scouts?

In Scouting we call this your "rank." But the terms can be a little confusing at first, because the same word is used to mean two different things as you go along. For example, when you are a first grader, you are a "Tiger Cub." But you still have to "earn rank," which means you've done everything required to be awarded and then actually wear the Tiger patch.

Let's go through the core progression and you'll start to get the language of Cub Scout ranks down in no time!

Bobcat

Boys can join Cub Scouts at pretty much any time after they become first graders, but before June 1 of their fifth grade year. Regardless of your age, the first rank you'll have to earn is called "Bobcat." Completing this means you know the basics of what's involved in being a Cub Scout. It's a way of assuring that every boy starts from the same place and knows what we expect when we interact with one another and society. If your Class A uniform shirt is blue, you can wear it on your left pocket.

Tiger Cub [link]

The earliest you can join Cub Scouts is after June 1 of the year you graduate from Kindergarten. These boys are called "Tiger Cubs."

You'll be a member of the Tiger Den. Together with other boys close to your own age, you'll work to earn the Tiger Cub patch by the time our Pack has its "Blue & Gold Banquet." Don't worry if you need more time: You have until June 1 of your first grade year to complete all the requirements.

You'll have a Den Leader. But Tiger Cubs' parents are especially involved in their Scouting experience, participating right along side you as you play games, visit neat places, and work to earn your Tiger patch. Until you earn your patch, you'll wear a "Totem" like the one shown here. You'll earn "beads" for progress toward your rank to immediately show everyone how hard you are working! Once you earn rank, you'll wear your Tiger patch on the left pocket of your blue Class A uniform shirt, below your Bobcat patch.

Wolf Cub [link]

If your dad, uncle, or some older relative or adult was a Cub Scout, don't be surprised he tells you that in his day, "Wolf" was the earliest age he could join.

If you joined as a Tiger, you automatically become a Wolf on June 1 at the end of that year — even if you didn't earn that rank (patch). It's the same if you join as a second-grader. Gold Arrow PointWolves get to do a little more stuff than younger boys: They can go to summer camp and spend the night with one of their parents in a tent, learn to safely use pocket knives, and be a bit more adventuresome.

Silver Arow PointYour Wolf patch goes on the left pocket of your blue Class A uniform shirt, lower and adjacent to your Bobcat patch, along the side closest to the "B" in "Bobcat." If you earn rank before the end of your second-grade year, there's still plenty to do! You can continue to work toward "Arrow Points," which, when earned, will also be worn on your uniform, starting below your Wolf patch.

Bear Cub [link]

Boys are still joining our Pack in the third grade, and this is their Den!

But if you've been around a while, you'll automatically advance to Bear on the June 1 that ends your second-grade year. It's a neat time to be a Cub Scout, because you feel like you know your way around and look forward to our traditions, like the Pinewood Derby, Spring Cabin Campout, and Cake Auction. Gold Arrow PointAt the same time, you're continuing to advance in your skill development, such as learning to safely build and extinguish fires.

Silver Arow PointOnce you earn rank, you'll wear your Bear patch on the same pocket and in line with your Wolf patch (if earned). It will touch and fit adjacent to your Bobcat patch, along the side closest to the "t" in "Bobcat." Just like the Wolf Cubs, you can earn "Arrow Points" after you make Bear, right up until you automatically advance to the Webelos level on June 1.

Webelos Scout [link]

As a Webelos Scout you're on the cusp of the Cub Scouting and becoming a Boy Scout. You're still a very important part of Pack 5, and the Adult Leaders will look to you more and more to set the example for our younger Cubs, and even take on some leadership responsibilities.

This is your last rank with us. It lasts about eighteen months, beginning when you graduate third grade: For the next twelve months, we'll know you as a "Webelos I Scout." You'll earn your Webelos patch sometime between December and "Blue & Gold" of your fourth-grade year. Then you'll continue completing Achievements that are recognized by pins worn on your "Webelos Colors" (shown at right).

Ideally, Webelos will sample highlights of the challenges they'll face and overcome when they become Boy Scouts. One of the most important goals for Pack 5 is to fully prepare these young men for the opportunity to join a Troop, and "Cross-Over" into it during our formal Spring ceremony.

Arrow of Light BadgeWebelos II Scouts who reach the pinnacle of success during this period will earn "Arrow of Light," the highest achievement in Cub Scouting.

Also take a look for this "knot" patch above the left pocket of the uniform on adult leaders. This means the man wearing it was once a Cub Scout himself, and it's a reminder that he, too, earned his own Arrow of Light, way-back-when!
