Cub Scout Pack 5              Basics

Chartered in 1936, we're one of the oldest Packs in the United States — based in the heart of Ann Arbor, Michigan!

How you can help your son as a
Cub Scout Pack 5 Parent

First see "What is Cub Scouts all about?" [link]

Cub Scout Packs are volunteer-run Units "chartered" by the Boy Scouts of America ("BSA"). This means that we operate according to a consistent set of rules that are designed to keep our boys safe when we are working with them, and to help ensure that the programming they are offered here is consistent with other Cub Scout Packs throughout the United States.

Within that, our Charter Organization, "Advent Associates," has the flexibility to decide what types of activities and outings we offer. You, as a parent, have a voice in that — and we want to hear from you!

(Regarding password protected files, see Cubmaster or Pack Committee Chair for access.)

The Pack 5 Committee: Where your voice is heard

Pack 5 is run by a Committee that meets once a month, year-round; dates and locations are listed on our Calendar. [link] These meetings are open to anyone, on a walk-in basis.

Our annual program Calendar is typically set in August for the following twelve months. This allows us to make room reservations with the Ann Arbor schools in which we meet, and start making arrangements for other resources. In some cases, bookings are made even further out, due to popularity of attractions such as our bi-annual overnighter on the USS Silversides. (Registered Adult Leaders, see "Program Planning." [link])

As you can imagine, our first priority is to secure help for existing program activities. It's the nature of Cub Scouting that each year we "graduate" some of our most experienced parents when they move on with their fifth-grade sons into Boy Scout Troops; they are mostly replaced with newer parents of first-graders (where, as part of our Tiger Cub Den, they have the heavier time commitment of maintaining our one-to-one parent-to-child ratio).

At the same time, we value the skills and connections you bring to the mix. So if you have ideas for activities not on our schedule or other places you think our Cub Scouts would enjoy seeing, the Pack 5 Committee Meeting is where you should be.

Pack 5 needs you as a "Registered Adult Leader"

Again: Pack 5 is a 100% volunteer-run organization. We need your involvement to make our current program happen, and to grow.

We'd like you to consider becoming a Registered Adult Leader with Pack 5. This means to you and your son.
  • We are able to check references on all of our Registered Adult Leaders, and the BSA runs a criminal background check on these applicants. So we have this as a basis when relying on you for work with our boys in Pack-related activities and outings. [link]

  • Registered Adult Leaders are covered through the Boy Scouts of America by a Comprehensive General Liability and Automobile Liability Insurance policy. [link]
This means Den Leaders, members of our Pack Committee, and Registered Adults who help coordinate our various stand-alone activities.

Two "official" ways you can serve (large or small within each)

"How" you help out depends on you. Our Pack operations are divided into two, cooperating parts: The "activity" side and the "business" side.
  • Direct-Contact Leaders. These people include our Cubmaster, Den Leaders, and Assistants, all of whom work with the boys on a routine basis.

  • Pack Committee. This is the group responsible for booking arrangements, fundraising, and behind-the-scenes preparations necessary for smooth Pack operations.
